Toyota Camry NASCAR Edition Tuned

Toyota_camry_nascar

The special two-door Toyota Camry NASCAR Edition was developed by RK Collection (RKC) to assist Toyota Racing Development (TRD) in visualizing the virtues of a standard Camry and morphing them into a powerful NASCAR counterpart.

The project was the visionary inspiration of Rob Kauffman, founder of RKC and co-owner of the NASCAR team Michael Waltrip Racing. The project was developed with the dual purpose of building and running a high-performance street legal Toyota Camry with a NASCAR engine. In partnership with TRD, RKC brought the concept to life with illustrations and a technical specs outline, rebuilding this one-of-a-kind high performance street machine. The vehicle was designed to showcase the technical alliance between TRD and RKC and demonstrate the connection between Toyota’s production vehicles and its strong NASCAR program.

Toyota Racing Team Visits Georgetown Plant

Celebrated NASCAR drivers and Kentuckians Darrell and Michael Waltrip visited the Bluegrass today for a rare, preseason appearance at Toyota’s Georgetown, Ky., plant. Joining the Owensboro natives was a well-known group of NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series and Nationwide Series drivers, along with several Toyota NASCAR team owners.

Camry drivers visiting the Georgetown plant included two Sprint Cup Series champions- Matt Kenseth (2003) and Bobby Labonte (2000). Other Camry drivers on hand were Clint Boyer, Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Elliott Sadler, Martin Truex Jr. and Brian Vickers, as well as Toyota team owners Joe Gibbs and Jodi Geschickter.

The Toyota drivers and team owners met officials from Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky, Inc. (TMMK), including plant president Wil James.

“At TMMK, we’re proud to manufacture the most American-made car- the Camry- and we’re honored to see Camry compete in NASCAR, a long-standing American tradition,” said James. “We’re equally proud of the team that will represent Toyota this racing season.”

Additionally, drivers and team owners toured TMMK’s facility, where production Camrys are manufactured. The Toyota Camry, America’s best-selling car for 11 straight years, has been assembled in Georgetown since 1988. In 2007, Toyota began competing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and NASCAR Nationwide Series with the Camry. The Toyota Racing group concluded their TMMK visit by participating in a special Q & A session for the plant’s team members, with three-time Sprint Cup Series champion Darrell Waltrip emceeing the event.

The veteran driver, now retired, holds the fourth most wins in NASCAR history and was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2012. His younger brother, Michael, the co-owner of Michael Waltrip Racing, is the part-time driver of the No. 55 Toyota Camry and a two-time Daytona 500 champion (2001, 2003).

“I’m proud to be a Toyota team owner and to be driving a Camry in this year’s Daytona 500, but I'm more proud that the Camry is built in my home state of Kentucky,” said Michael Waltrip.

Team members attending the event were also able to get an up-close look at the new 2013 Camry for NASCAR competition, which was on display. The 2013 Camry that will compete in the Sprint Cup series has been redesigned and now more closely resembles the production Camry.

The NASCAR racing season will kick off later this month with the Daytona 500 on Sunday, Feb. 24.

Toyota Will Debut i-Road Two-Seat Plug-In Concept

The phrase "it's a bird, it's a plane" may be straight out of Norman Rockwell days, but it certainly applies to the Toyota vision of futuristic urban, gas-free transportation.

The Japanese automaker says the world-premiere concept unveiling of a two-seat urban electric vehicle called the i-Road will take place at the Geneva Motor Show next month, and has released a top-view picture of the model.

For now, all that Toyota will say about the i-Road is that it is "compact," "fun" and "emissions-free." The picture appears to reveal a tandem-seating arrangement and a layout that includes two semi-detached front wheels and a single windshield wiper (hey, the car's pretty narrow). Beyond that, well, there's not much to go on.

Along with the i-Road, Toyota will be showing off its FT-86 "open" concept, the Auris Touring Sports wagon and the fourth-generation RAV4 SUV. The show starts March 7.
